| The University of Zagreb Medical School is a public institution of higher education within the University of Zagreb, which is responsible for the organization and performance of university studies, research and continuing education in the area of biomedicine and health. The Zagreb Medical School is an independent legal entity founded by the University of Zagreb. The School is headed and represented by the Dean. The Dean chairs the sessions of the Senate and safeguards the implementation of decisions and rulings of all the organizational bodies of the school. In his/her work the Dean is assisted by vice-deans, dean’s assistants and the School secretary.
Professional issues are addressed by the Academic Senate composed of elected representatives of the body of professors, associate professors, assistant professors, lecturers and other teaching associates and students. Standing and ad-hoc committees are assigned the task of solving specific problems and assist the dean and both senates (the Academic Senate and the Senate for Postgraduate Studies) in decision making. Organization of the School The Zagreb Medical School carries out its activities in academic teaching and research through its affiliates and organizational units. Rich in tradition, the “Andrija Štampar” School of Public Health is an affiliate of the Zagreb Medical School recognised by its reputation both home and abroad. Predominantly preoccupied with public health problems, the School has been widely acclaimed for its organization of international postgraduate courses and studies and its research in new teaching methodologies and application of informatics. The Croatian Institute for Brain Research is affiliated to the Zagreb Medical School as an independent research and educational institution responsible for multidisciplinary research and interuniversity teaching in the field of neuroscience. It also fosters research and teaching in other basic biomedical sciences. Both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching is primarily carried out at the level of Departments. They are particularly responsible for the quality of teaching at all levels, the selection and promotion of faculty and all other issues related to the teaching process. University Clinics and Clinical Institutes belong to those health institutions which are responsible for clinical teaching and training of students. The relationship between the Zagreb Medical School and its clinical facilities is settled on a contractual basis.
